What Right Do We Have To Bind Others In Any Way?

What gives us the right to bind another person’s will to God’s will? Or another person’s mind to the mind of Christ? I was so surprised the first time I heard these questions, especially when someone said that binding another’s person’s will to the will of God was witchcraft. That person had no idea of what witchcraft really is. Witchcraft is always an attempt by someone to control another person’s will for personal gain. There is no personal gain in binding someone’s will to the will of God. I only knew such praying worked, and I felt it had to be the most sure thing God could want me to pray for others. As much as this reasoning satisfied me, I did not expect anyone else to accept the issue as forever settled. Then someone called my attention to the following verses in Proverbs. Maybe we can settle this once and for all now.

Proverbs 24:11-12, KJV: “If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain; if thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? And he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? And shall not he render to every man according to his works?”

Proverbs 24:11-12, AMP: “Deliver those who are drawn away to death, and those who totter to the slaughter hold back from their doom. If you profess ignorance and say, Behold, we did not know this, does not He Who weighs and ponders the hearts perceive and consider it? And He Who guards your life, does not He know it? And shall not He render to you and every man according to his works?”

Proverbs 24:11-12, NIV: “Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. If you say, ‘But we knew nothing about this,’ does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay each person according to what he has done?”

Proverbs 24:11-12, The Message: “Rescue the perishing; don’t hesitate to step in and help. If you say, ‘Hey, that’s none of my business,’ will that get you off the hook? Someone is watching you closely, you know-Someone not impressed with weak excuses.”

Jude 23, KJV: “Others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire…”

Jude 23, TAB: “Strive to save others…”

Jude 23, NIV: “Snatch others from the fire…”

Jude 23, The Message: “Go after those who take the wrong way…”

These verses are not speaking of people being drug into hell because of the devil. All who stand at the edge of his fire stand there as a result of wrong, free-will choices they have made in order to walk in paths of destruction. God will not violate or cross their free wills because of His own reasons, but God’s Word is clearly telling me one thing: I am to do nearly anything I can to stop them!

  • Do not forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death!
  • Those who totter to the slaughter, hold back from their doom!
  • Rescue those being led away to death!
  • Hold back those staggering toward slaughter!
  • Rescue the perishing, don’t hesitate to step in and help!
  • Pull them out of the fire!
  • Strive to save them!
  • Snatch them from the fire!
  • Go after them!

How are we to obey these commands and know we will not be found wanting in God’s balance scales, clinging only to weak excuses? Should we stand stoically at the edge of the fire, holding protest signs and offering witnessing tracts? Should we give our testimony to them? Should we display our lives as a light that we hope they will follow? NO! Someone at the edge of the flames needs aggressive intervention, and a passive protest or gentle testimony may be too little, too late. We must do the most powerful thing we know how to do to obey God’s Word and challenge their path. This is no time to worry about offending anyone!

Unfortunately, most of us still have unhealed areas in us that pull back from possibly offending someone by confronting his spiritual state. If you haven’t dealt with that, and some near you are in immediate danger, don’t go home and try to first work through your issues of shyness or pride. Be aggressive on your knees. Contrary to some opinions, getting on your knees to pray is not a “passive” position. You’re never so righteously aggressive or spiritually tall in God’s eyes as when you’re on your knees, praying past any input of your unsurrendered soul. Begin to bind and loose for those lost lambs every chance you get You can do it in private. Do it in hiding. Do it in bed; do it under the bed. Just do it!

Great forcefulness is implied in these Scriptures, not only for what we are supposed to do, but also in the consequences of any lack of our obedience to this direct commandment. We’re being closely watched to see if we are obeying this word from God. There won’t be any excuses we’re capable of coming up with that will be able to explain away a lack of our own accountability when God says, “What did you do to prevent that lamb’s death sentence?”
